Naming convention: meaning depends on the field
In plain English
In quantum mechanics, the wavefunction. encodes the state of a system. Its squared magnitude gives the probability of finding a particle in a given place. itself is a complex-valued amplitude, not a probability, and amplitudes can cancel (interference). Outside physics is just another letter: a feature map in kernel methods, the digamma function, pounds per square inch.

What it means, field by field
Quantum wavefunction / state vector |ψ⟩; evolves by the Schrödinger equation.
Arbitrary function name; digamma function ψ(x).
Occasionally a feature map ψ(x) or an encoder’s parameters. No standard meaning.
Water potential Ψ in plant physiology.
In a research paper
The probability density of finding the particle at x is the squared magnitude of the wavefunction there.
Common misreadings
Treating ψ as a probability. It is an amplitude, and only |ψ|² is a probability density.
Importing quantum vocabulary into ML ("the model’s wavefunction collapses") as if it explained anything. That is an analogy with no shared mechanism.
